WARP TV: Nissin Ramen, The Manliest Ramen Ever!

Hey all. I just wanted to put up a quick post to let you know I'm still alive. The podcast should be returning soon, but here's a little something to watch in the interim. A year or so ago I downloaded a torrent consisting of nothing but various Japanese television commercials. I've been rather intrigued by these so I thought I'd post up some of my favorites. Formatted for your iPod so you can waste time at school, work, or your next proctologist exam.

This has to be the manliest instant ramen noodle commercial ever. I think it could only get manlier if Kenshiro from Fist Of The North Star would team up with Nissin to create a even manlier version. But I'm afraid that will never happen.

Speaking of manly men, if your needing a Aaron fix you can listen to me on episode #115 of Most People Are DJs. I'm not talking about anime though. Instead I chat with Mikel OD about a Henry Rollins spoken word show I attended. If they ever made a live action version of Fist Of The North Star, I sure hope they would cast Rollins as Kenshiro.

Enjoy the commercial, and let me know if your interested in seeing more of this sort of thing.

Hiatus Time

Hello friends.  I'm a liar, really I am.... and I'm sorry for it.  According to the title of the podcast I'm supposed to get shows out WEEKLY.  I haven't been living up to that promise for awhile.  As you can see I haven't released a podcast in over a month.

Just to let you all know everything is fine in my little corner of the world.  But thanks for all the e-mail inquiries, I do appreciate them as always.  It seems that I've hit a wall with podcasting.  I still like podcasting and of course I still love anime, but I'm afraid I'm starting to burn out a bit with getting the podcasts out each week.  Unlike other podcasts this is a one man affair, meaning that I do the whole thing myself.  While this has worked out fine in the past, lately it's just been too much.  So to let you know I'm putting the podcast on hiatus.

You can expect the final Japan Trip cast to show up before too long though.  We still want to talk about our adventures in Akihabara, and our day at the Studio Ghibli museum.  Both of which were absolutely amazing.  These episodes have been a bit experimental and haven't been ordinary WARP podcasts.  I wanted to try something different, and I think these were a nice change of pace.  The response has been really positive, so thanks for everyone who has stuck around during these out of format episodes.

Speaking of format that is something I want to change once WARP starts back up.  I do still want to change the name of the podcast eventually, and start concentrating on Japanese pop-culture as a whole instead of just anime.  You know other things I love about Japan like movies, TV dramas, video games, music, etc.

Thanks for subscribing and sticking around for the past two years.  What started out as a way to get myself to watch my ever growing queue of DVDs (and to justify the college education I'm still paying off) has led to so much more.  Thanks to this podcast I've made many friends and have had experiences I wouldn't have had otherwise.  For those reasons alone I don't want to end the podcast.  So the show is going on hiatus, and one day soon it'll be back better then ever.  So why not stay subscribed since you'll never know what might come down the old RSS feed.

- Aaron

Episode 62 - Japan Trip Part 3

This is the third part of our Japan travelogue where our heroes sleep in a ryokan, party it up at the Sanja Festival, hob knob with yakuza, and bathe with a naked Scotsman!

Sorry about the lack of podcasts lately. On top of being summer I've just been really unmotivated lately when it comes to podcasting. But thanks to everyone who got my butt in gear, here is another episode! Thanks for all the e-mails, and be assured that everything is well in my little world. I've just been a very bad and lazy podcaster. :(

Stuff we talked about:
  • Our trip photos - over on Diana's Flickr.
  • Okonomiyaki @ Wikipedia - see above picture, it was so delicious!
  • Godzilla statue in Ginza
  • The Ryokan Asakusa Shigetsu - the fantastic ryokan we stayed at.
  • Ear Picks @ Wikipedia - those crazy Japanese ear cleaners. You really can find anything on Wikipedia!
  • The Sanja Matsuri - the incredible Shinto festival we attended. A definite highlight of our trip.
  • The Rituals and Etiquette of the Japanese Public Bath - you too can bathe with complete strangers!
  • MOS Burger - who wants to open a franchise in Ohio? This place rocked.
  • JapanesePod101 - thanks to these guys we didn't completely look like stupid Americans.
  • Yakuza @ Wikipedia - lots of tattoos, not too many fingers.

Huge Geneon DVD Sale at RightStuf.com

Since DeepDiscountDVD screwed me over good last year, I refuse to pimp their semi-annual DVD sale. Instead I want to call your attention to a great deal going on at RightStuf.com.

In response to DDD's sale RightStuf has brought back their nutso Geneon DVD sale. I got in on this late last year so I missed out on some stuff, which I picked up in this sale. From a special list all Geneon DVD are 10 for $50, and 25 for $100 (US funds). If your in the US you also get free shipping.

Lots of great titles are included in this sale such as: Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent, Captain Harlock, Master Keaton, New Getter Robo, Hajime No Ippo, Tetsujin 28, and lots more. At $4 a disc you can't go wrong.

The sale runs until June 27th so go check it out. I'm not getting anything from this plug, I just wanted to pass along what I thought was a killer deal. I know I could sign up for their affiliate program, but I'm just too lazy. ^_^

Episode 58 - Japan Trip Part 1

We're back from Aaron & Diana's Japan Adventure so we thought we'd sit down and podcast about it while it was still fresh in our minds. The trip was absolutely amazing, except for the long assed airplane ride. But you'll hear all about that when you download this week's podcast. We ended up talking much longer then we intended, so this is the first part of the trip covering our first couple of days in Tokyo. If you like this podcast check back next week for Part Two!

  • Our Trip Photos - Over on Diana's Flickr account since I'm lazy. ^_^
  • JTB's Sunrise Tour, "Dynamic Tokyo Tour"
  • Tokyo Tower - check out the phallic little mascots. I can't believe I forgot to mention this.
  • Happo-en Garden - we participated in a tea ceremony here.
  • Chinzan-so - another beautiful garden, and the home of Mokushundo resturant where we ate lunch.
  • Sumida River Cruise - from Hinode Pier to Asakusa on the Sumida River Line.
  • Nakamise-dori in Asakusa - a huge tourist trap, but still great fun.
  • Kouryu Ramen - we ate here in Akihabara. It was our first time eating on our own in Japan. The ramen was awesome.
  • Super Potato - An amazing retrogaming store in Akihabara.

Episode 57 - Special Double Episode!

Since I haven't got a show out in awhile I'm proud to bring you a Special Double Episode! I haven't been living up to the "Weekly" part of the podcast for awhile now, and I do apologize. Hopefully I'll get back on track soon. Thanks to everyone for sticking around!

In this podcast I respond to the ton of listener feedback I've recived over the past few weeks. I also talk about my recent experiences buying items from Yahoo! Auction Japan through Rinkya.com, a auction proxy website. Was it worth paying lots of money for little plastic girls? Find out in this week's podcast!

Mentioned links:
  • Old Fart Loves Japanese Pop Culture - Kevin's awesome blog. He covers tons of J-Dramas, anime, manga, and more!
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - the game referred to as "Summer Cicadas" in the Akihabara Geeks documentary.
  • Rinkya.com - a proxy auction site that helps you buy hard to find items through Yahoo! Auction Japan.

Ohno is very bouncy indeed!

Episode 55 - Real Life Otaku

Welcome back for another great episode. I'll call this one the "Real Life Otaku" episode since I take a look at a couple DVDs that look into Japanese otaku culture. The first is the documentary Akihabara Geeks which came out on DVD earlier this year from Media Blasters. The second is Viz Pictures release of the Train Man: Densha Otoko movie. I reviewed the TV series way back in episode 4, but this DVD release is also worth your time. Listen to find out why!

Be sure to listen in to learn how you can win a free anime DVD too. Thanks to Funimation for providing DVDs to giveaway. All this and more crammed into 30 minutes of anime podcast goodness!

Hey fools, I'm back from the dead. Be sure to listen to this episode to find out where my lame ass has been. Also we hear some great listener reviews, do some e-mail and voicemail, and just have a old fashioned good time. The above image is my first fan art ever, and I forgot to mention it on the podcast. Ugh! Much thanks to Tsakura from Tsakura's Wataame Podcast for sending it in. Also listen past the end of the episode for a special voicemail from Amy. It didn't really fit in with the rest of the show, but it's still pretty cool so I wanted to include it. It's good to be back!

WARP Vidcast #1: Anime Punch 2006

May I present to you my newest grand experiment, the first ever WARP vidcast. This is a collection of video footage that Diana and I took last March at Anime Punch. Anime Punch 2006, the Armageddicon, took place March 30th to April 2nd, 2006 in Columbus, OH. It's taking place again this year on the very same weekend. So if you like what you see in this video podcast, do yourself a favor and plan on attending. It was my favorite con that I attended last year (and yes I am including Otakon).

Among the things you will see in this video are: highlights from the always awesome "Your Favorite Anime Sucks!" panel, Joshua Seth voice actor/hypnotist making virgin otaku men believe they are giving birth, the incredible Spoony Bards rocking the joint, as much of the masquerade as we could stomach (I did tape more but no one used the microphones), and more con hijinx and hillarity that you can cram into 30 minutes.

The video file in the feed is formated to play on iPods or in iTunes. I know some of you don't use either and so I uploaded the video to Google Video. I know I say it's on YouTube in the podcast, but at the time I didn't realize how restrictive they were on file size.

This is the very first ever video I've edited so please keep that in mind. Diana was a lot of help in putting this thing together, and I couldn't have done it without her. So if you don't like it, it's her fault. ^_^ Also there are a variety of different colorful words used in the video. So this podcast has the honor of being the first to carry the explicit tag in my feed. So it's safe to assume this probably isn't safe for work. I hope you enjoy this, and as always, all feedback is welcomed.

  • Joshua Seth - hypnotist and anime voice actor.

Episode 51 - Perfect Blue

I want to apologize for the lack of a podcast for the past month and a half. I've been a very bad podcaster. But I've been dealing with some personal issues and haven't been in the podcasting mood. Don't fear however. The podcast is not dead, and will be coming back real soon.

Here's a little something to tide you over. I was sent in this great review of Perfect Blue by C2 Anime Reviews. Those of you who have been listening for awhile know that I have shown my love for Satoshi Kon in my reviews of Tokyo Godfathers and Paranoia Agent. This film is no exception and is one of his more well known works. Enjoy the review, and you should be hearing more from me soon.

Also, Podcast Pickle has reset everyone's favorites at the beginning of 2007. If you could add WARP to your favorites at Podcast Pickle again I'd really appreciate it. I'd also like to thank whoever added WARP to Digg's new podcast directory. I haven't asked for any diggs and there are over 70 right now. Thanks a lot for your continued support!

Quick update.

Since I haven't had the time to put out a podcast in the last couple weeks, I wanted to post real quick about who won the last contest. I'd like to congratulate Dave from New Jersey who not only won a brand new Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie DVD, but also got a t-shirt as well!

If you remember I played a short montage of 5 different anime songs in episode 50. To be included in the drawing you had to identify all 5 of the songs. If you weren't able to get all five, here they are:
  • Melissa by Porno Graffiti. This was the first opening theme for Fullmetal Alchemist.
  • Konya wa Hurricane by Kinuko Oomori. This was the opening song for the first episode of Bubblegum Crisis.
  • Tank! by the Seatbelts and composed by Yoko Kanno. This was the opening theme of Cowboy Bebop.
  • Tobe! Gundam, the opening theme from Mobile Suit Gundam (First Gundam).
  • Cruel Angel's Thesis, opening theme for Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I really thought these wouldn't be too hard but most of you got stuck on the Gundam and Bubblegum Crisis tunes. I thought the Gundam one was the hardest, but not too hard since I reviewed Gundam in the same episode. Thanks for everyone who entered, and stay tuned to the podcast for future contests for more anime DVDs!

Speaking of the podcast you might have noticed that I haven't put anything out in the last couple weeks. With the holiday season upon us I've been really busy with work, life, and some personal stuff. This is the busiest time of year at my job since I work for a shipping company. So I might not put out anything new until next month.

In the meantime don't forget to stay subscribed via iTunes, add WARP to your favorites at Podcast Pickle, drop me an e-mail at weeklyanimereview@gmail.com, or better yet leave a voicemail at 206-339-9277 to get yourself on the podcast.

Thanks to everyone who has supported WARP this past year, and I look forward to bringing you more anime podcasts in 2007!

Episode 50 - Mobile Suit Gundam

This week we celebrate the 50th episode of WARP with a extra long episode and special guests! I take a look at the original classic mecha anime Mobile Suit Gundam.

Eeeper from the always great Eeeper's Choice Podcast brings us a review of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz. Author and podcaster extraordinaire Tee Morris brings us a convention report from Anime USA, which took place November 17-19 in Tysons Corner, VA. Of course we also check out some voicemail and read some e-mail.

But what would the 50th podcast be with a contest? Be sure to listen for your chance to win your very own copy of the Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie 2-Disc Special Edition DVD set! The deadline for entires is December 14th, so don't wait and enter today.

Please note:
Just to make it clear the contest is open to everyone in the world. What's the fun in making a contest US only like some other podcasts? :)
